Regarding the Artist:
Bouguereau was a French painter whose style was influenced by and epitomizes the standards of the French Academie des Beaux-Arts. He used mythological themes in his realistic genre paintings, with an emphasis on the female human body.
Bougereau was highly popular both in the United States and France during his lifetime. He received several official honors and received top prices for his work.
He was considered the quintessential salon painter of his generation.
Due to changing tastes, by the early twentieth century, Bouguereau’s art was no longer in favor with the public, although in the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work.
Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are unknown.
